The first 11 days in London...

My laptop arrived yesterday - oh how I love it so! Thanks Rem, for bringing it to London for me!! I can finally load up my photos and let you in on what I've been up to the past week and a bit.

London is such a fast paced city. The first two days were spent doing the whole touristy walk around town: Trafalgar Square, Soho, Carnaby Street, Big Ben, St Pauls Cathedral, Chelsea. I also went to the Tate Modern with SJ and spent a couple of hours there. They have a UBS collection spread over 4 wings. The 2 hours spent weren't nearly enough time!

I was jetlagged for most of the past week, thankfully I'm fully recovered now. One thing that I have not recovered from is hayfever...my god, it is 10 times worse than in Melbourne! Every morning without fail I wake up sneezing. And after a few trips on the Tube, I blow my nose and it's all black from the grime! But enough with the whinging - there are a lot of great things about this place.

...like the shopping :) I promised myself not to buy anything, since I am limited on cash at the moment. But you know, the high street can prove pretty tempting. I bought 4 lovely things from Zara the other day - pair of chunky black Gladiator/Balenciaga inspired platform heels that I had to track down through calling each store in London. Last pair in my size, wooo! Tartan silk billowy blouse, black deep V-neck kaftan minidress, floral pastel silk ruffled smock blouse, and a navy/white preppy blazer. I want to get this oversized blazer now...!

Frivolity aside, I have been getting stuck into looking for jobs. Due to a few problems that I will not mention on here, I have been feeling the pressure to find work ASAP. So the whole week was spent sending in CVs, attending interviews with recruitment agencies and this week I have a few more interviews. I also ended up landing a job in retail, which wasn't ideal, but I felt I was in dire need of cash. It was at this cute boutique in Chelsea called Heidi Klein that sells their own swimwear brand as well as stock Missoni Mare, Eres and Tom Ford sunglasses. When I asked about the pay though, and heard it was a measly £6.50 per hour, I decided not to take the offer because, well, I think I'm worth more than that! Also got a few calls from this luxury brand recruiter who wanted me to come in to temp at a few boutiques over the next few weeks. I am hoping that I ace my interview on Tuesday as it is for a job I really want!

Yesterday I went to the Portobello Road markets with Rem - such a great day out! I saw a huge line snaking out of The Hummingbird Bakery, which is like the UK version of Magnolia Cupcakes in NYC; made famous as it was featured in an episode of Sex and the City. God, those cupcakes were awesome! Lots of pretty antique trinkets, vintage shops and food stalls. Oh, the food stalls - everything from a cup of churros for £3.50, felafel stalls, fresh fruit and cheese...we ended up buying a 100g worth of Brie and ate it in the park with a baguette. And I helped pick out some Nudies at this great vintage shop for Rem, only £25 too!

Today I am visiting the London Eye as my host is taking me there...I am a lucky girl indeed. And hopefully a West End show this evening so I can dress up and wear my new shoes.

Here are a selection of photos from my first week and a bit here! Enjoy, and keep in touch.

I'm finally here!

I have arrived in London! The past 48 hours has been quite amusing. I spent about 40 of that travelling and waiting. Highlights:

  • Looking after the bags of an American rabbi (at least, I thought he was one) and a Texan nanny/carer (she had the whole drawl going on too) with a geriatric when I was waiting 5 hrs at Auckland airport. I was sleeping in the lounges near the gate and they made me look after their stuff. :S
  • Scoring the entire 'front row' middle aisle seats from HK - LON...you know those ones right at the front with no seats (instead that wall with the in-built cots attached to them)...meaning I could lie down and stretch my legs. Yay!
  • Fitting My Little Pony in my luggage...
  • ...and getting away with 25-26 kg check-in without getting charged for it.
  • My Sex and the City quote when I left Melbourne
  • Getting free food vouchers when my plane from HK got delayed 5 hours
  • Finished reading May/Jun Russh from cover to cover!
  • My loved friends visiting and spending time with me before I left
  • Gifts and Ron & Mash's scrapbook
  • Looking out the window of the plane upon arriving at Heathrow and realising that this was the right decision all along.
  • Having dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Wimbledon and seeing food that is twice the price as you would find back home, but a third of the portion of a generous meal in Melb. At this rate I will surely lose weight!
Photos to come soon...I can't find a USB port in this Mac?

Plans today are to set up a bank account, get a UK SIM and meet SJ for lunch. Feeling jetlagged so time for bed!

Nite,

Productive much? :D

Finally got my act together and started packing, after procrastinating for a week. I really dreaded cleaning out my room...now it's cold, empty and doesn't feel like 'mine' anymore :( I hope this London move is for the best because I'm getting cold feet (to which my brother answered 'Why don't you just put on some socks then?' Humour wasn't always his strong point ;) ) and you know, maybe it's just easier to cancel my ticket and stay home. Ah, too late - 48 hours to go and I'm on the plane! No backing out now.
Half way through packing - this lot doesn't even include shoes. Looks like I'll have to cull what I've got in half!
My checklist! So proud of myself, I had ticked most of these boxes weeks ago :)
One last pic of my wall collage...Manda, pics from our Hawaii 07' trip takes up most of this wall!

Gifts from friends - love you guys! haha check out the My Little Pony soft toy...Looi, you crack me up! Amber, Suwei, Renee, Vix and little Manda, thank you all! :) And Abs, thanks for the huge supply of uh, feminine hygeine products. hehe
